Preamble to the Declaration of Independence
Last Fourth of July, I remember feeling, for the first time ever in my life, like not celebrating because I was sad about the state of our country. This year, I recognize the importance of celebrating the message that our country’s founders created as a foundation to our Declaration of Independence. Looking at these words and principles, I asked myself, “How am I celebrating Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?”
I understand that it is my responsibility and desire to model these values, and in doing so, just maybe, I will be the change I wish to see in the world.
I celebrate life daily with a practice of gratitude. I value all living creatures and recognize the divine circle of life.
I celebrate liberty with the awareness of the freedom I have to make choices. I honor the similarities and differences in others and respect their choices. I’m aware of where I might judge others for doing things differently from me, and I practice letting go of the judgment.
I pursue happiness through seeing the world through the eyes of love, and sharing that through random acts of kindness. I recognize that part of my soul’s purpose is to offer a smile, a kind word, a simple acknowledgement; this is one way I pursue happiness.
I celebrate and appreciate the freedom that we have in our country and honor and celebrate you. May we all work and play together to celebrate life, liberty and a pursuit of happiness.
